How to Ground Yourself Spiritually: 12 Practical Techniques to Try
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel disconnected—from nature, from others, and even from yourself. With so many distractions pulling you in different directions, it’s important to find ways to stay centered and balanced.
Grounding yourself spiritually can help you reconnect with your inner self, enhance your emotional stability, and foster a sense of calm amid chaos.
What does it mean to ground yourself?
To ‘be grounded,’ or ‘grounding yourself,’ essentially means staying connected to the present moment without getting lost in thoughts or emotions. The ground, or Earth, is symbolic of stability and strength, so staying grounded essentially means finding your inner connection to the Earth.
Grounding also refers to bodily contact with the Earth’s natural electric charge: think of the Earth like a battery power source. When you learn how to ground yourself, it’s like recharging your own battery.
When you’re grounded, you feel clear, centered, strong, and focused, instead of getting lost in anxiety. It’s a powerful way to stay in the mind-body connection so that you can remain self-aware.
How does it feel to not be grounded?
When you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety and stress and your mind is racing, this can cause you to feel “not” grounded. When you’re not grounded, it can be hard for you to focus.
When you’re not grounded, you may feel certain symptoms, such as:
· Dizziness or lightheadedness
· Fatigue
· Difficulty concentrating
· Feelings of disconnection
· Clumsy
· Shaky
· Sick
· Sensitive to light
· Forgetful
· Nervous
· Tired
Not being grounded can stem from several situations, including, but not limited to:
You’re trying to accomplish many things at once.
You’ve overcommitted your time and energy.
You get overwhelmed by your emotions and/or thoughts.
You find yourself in a situation that doesn’t align with your values, goals, or purpose.
What are some benefits of grounding?
There are many benefits to grounding. Some of these benefits include:
· Reduced inflammation and pain
· Reduced stress
· Improved blood flow and circulation
· Improved energy levels
· Improved sleep
· Improved mood
· Heart health benefits
How Does Grounding Tie in With Spirituality?
Spiritual Grounding is a practice that connects your mind, body, and heart with the Earth’s magnetic field of energy. This point of steadiness provides you with physical and emotional balance. When you learn how to ground yourself, you become present, and you feel more at peace with your true self.
Being spiritually grounded means you can shake off negative thoughts, comments, or challenges that arise because you can stay calm, centered, and balanced in any situation. You feel solid, strong, less tense, and less stressed. When you “electrically charge” yourself to the ground, it can stabilize and balance the spiritual and physical energy in your body.
Here Are 12 Ways to Ground Yourself Spiritually:
1. Connect with nature
Spend time in nature, such as a forest or by the ocean. Engage your senses by looking at the clouds, listening to the birds, smelling the flowers, or touching or hugging a tree. Walk barefoot and feel the ground beneath you.
2. Practice yoga
Yoga can help you connect with your inner self and help you develop a greater sense of self-awareness. The mountain pose (Tadasana) or the chair pose (Utkatasana) are two great yoga poses for grounding.
3. Practice deep breathing
Deep breathing can help calm anxiety and engage you in the present moment. An easy deep breathing exercise you can try is counting to 4 on the inhale, then counting to 4 on the exhale. Repeat for at least 5 minutes.
4. Positive affirmations
During a meditation you can say the following positive affirmations to help ground yourself. If it’s hard for you to meditate, use a mirror. Take a few deep breaths and look at yourself in the mirror while you say the following positive affirmations to yourself out loud:
I am connected to the earth.
I am safe.
I am grateful.
I am strong, steady, and grounded.
I inhale trust and I exhale fear.
I am worthy.
I am guarded and protected.
All is well in my world.
I am loved.
The universe will always provide.
I am powerful.
5. Take a Salt Bath
Salts can ground you because of their natural healing properties. Pick up some scented sea salt or Himalayan salt, such as lavender-scented. Add 1 cup to a bathtub. Sit in the salt bath and enjoy for 20 - 30 minutes. You can enhance the salt bath by lighting some candles around you, listen to some relaxing or meditation music during it, and turning the lights off to enhance your sense of smell and touch.
6. Do a loving-kindness meditation, also called a Metta meditation
Below are the steps for a loving-kindness meditation. You can also find guided loving-kindness meditations on streaming platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. You can say the following meditation mantra in your mind or out loud.
Sit comfortably in a place where you won’t be disturbed and gently close your eyes.
Breathe in gently. Exhale gently.
Repeat each of the following intentions, directing love and kindness toward yourself first:
May I be loved.
May I be safe.
May I have self-compassion.
May I live with ease.
Now, recall someone you love. Feel your appreciation for them, and then share this offering of love and kindness to them:
May you be loved.
May you be safe.
May you have compassion.
May you live with ease.
Now think of someone who’s neutral to you, someone you see regularly but don’t have a close relationship with. It might be a coworker you don’t often interact with, a cashier at your local store, or someone you follow on social media.
Bring this person into your mind and direct love and kindness toward them:
May you be loved.
May you be safe.
May you have compassion.
May you live with ease.
Now recall someone you have a more difficult relationship with.
Remember that no matter how much this person has hurt you, they suffer too. Acknowledge their sadness, acknowledge their anxieties and their fears, and do your best to extend words of love and kindness toward this person:
May you be loved.
May you be safe.
May you have compassion.
May you live with ease.
Now, open your awareness to all beings everywhere, all humans and animals all over the globe. Now direct love and kindness toward them, and yourself:
May all beings everywhere be loved.
May all beings everywhere be safe.
May all beings everywhere have compassion.
May all beings everywhere live with ease.
Finally, bring love and kindness back to yourself:
May I be loved.
May I be safe.
May I have self-compassion.
May I live with ease.
Relax in this stillness and enjoy the energy of love and kindness.
Allow yourself to be still until you’re ready to open your eyes and come out of your meditation at your own pace.
7. Grounding cords exercise
It’s important that in the following exercise, the grounding cords surround you, but that you don’t feel that they’re tight around your body. They’re going around your physical body and the energy field around you, so you should wrap them loosely around your body.
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Relax your mind and your body.
You’re now going to pull the following 3 grounding cords around your body and energy field, and through your roots:
A white grounding cord with a protective layer of light and energy to surround yourself with a spiritual shield.
A gold grounding cord for general protection of the highest good.
A platinum lead grounding cord for protection against toxic energy.
Envision the white grounding cord coming down from the sky, into the building you’re in, into your body through the top of your head, and then wrapping around you for spiritual protection and positivity. It wraps all the way down your body, then out through the roots of the soles of your feet, like roots of an oak tree, and goes down deep into the earth, all the way to its core. Feel it clasp onto Mother Earth.
Then do the same with the gold grounding cord for your divine connection with Spirit.

When you’re ready, begin to open your eyes and bring your awareness back to the room.
8. Help others
When you become too busy with yourself to serve others, it’s best to bring yourself to the present moment and ground yourself by helping others.
Here are some ideas to help others:
Go to a shelter for dogs and offer to take one of them for a walk.
Volunteer in your community.
Offer a helping hand to your friend with something that they need help with.
Grab a coffee for your neighbor.
Engage in random acts of kindness.
9. Spiritual reflecting through journaling
Writing is a powerful tool for grounding because it helps you process your thoughts and emotions. By journaling, you create space to reflect on your spiritual journey, uncover patterns in your thinking, and bring your unconscious feelings to the surface.
You can try journaling in the morning to set intentions for the day, or you can journal in the evening to reflect on how you felt connected (or disconnected) throughout your day. Over time, this habit will help you understand yourself better and help you to feel more in-tune with your inner spirit.

10. Use Crystals for Grounding
Crystals are often used as spiritual tools to help channel energy and promote healing. Certain crystals, like black tourmaline, hematite, and smoky quartz, are particularly effective for grounding because they carry protective, stabilizing energies. Holding or wearing one of these grounding stones can help you feel more centered and connected to the earth. You can also place one under your pillow or put these crystals in the four corners of a room you’re usually in.
11. Engage in Physical Movement
Grounding yourself spiritually doesn’t always mean sitting still. Physical activities like yoga, tai chi, or even simple stretching can help you reconnect with your body and the earth. These mindful movements help release tension and stress while encouraging the flow of life energy, or prana, throughout your body.
12. Set intentions
Your thoughts and beliefs shape your energy, so setting grounding intentions can help you align with your higher purpose and help you to stay connected on your spiritual path. Setting intentions can also provide you with clarity and focus, connect you to the present moment, and empower you to live authentically. Setting intentions helps you to stay rooted in the present moment and connected to your higher self.
Examples of setting an intention:
I intend to move my body physically so that it feels good, and then acting on that intention by doing an exercise that you love to do.
I intend to practice self-care, and then setting up and doing a self-care routine.
Conclusion
Grounding techniques are not a one-size-fits-all approach. You should experiment with different strategies and use the ones that work best for you.
Grounding yourself spiritually is an ongoing practice that requires intention and mindfulness. Whether through connecting with nature, engaging in physical movement, or practicing any of the techniques listed above, the goal is to foster a sense of stability and balance that allows you to navigate life with greater peace and clarity.
